She shook her head. “No,” she murmured. “Let’s not spoil it.”

Once again it came home to him how very different she was from any other woman he had known. He opened his mouth to press the issue, then closed it again. Instead, he shut his eyes and drew in the scent of warm, spent woman, and felt that unfamiliar instinct—that surging wish to protect her—tug at him again. He had done it. He had committed…to something, surely?

Steady on, old boy, said the devilish imp on his shoulder. And keep your mouth shut. You don’t owe her a bloody thing.

It was true, perhaps, Tristan realized. The heat of lust had given way to the languor of enervation, and his cooler, more rational mind was beginning to function again. Phaedra had not been a virgin. He had not—well, taken anything from her save his own pleasure. He had not irreparably damaged her in any way.

No, someone else had done that. And he wanted—suddenly and fiercely—to kill them. But why?

Why wasn’t he thanking his lucky stars? He had leapt into this mess believing himself some sort of martyr, ready to do the right thing—and that fact by itself was damning. But now to learn his martyrdom was not needed…

He should have been relieved. And he was, he supposed. Yet beneath it lay an odd sort of anger.

Not with Phaedra, no. He was not yet so sunk in self-absorption as to believe he could hold her to a higher standard than himself. So she wasn’t a virgin. There had been someone—perhaps more than one someone—before him. And there he was, back to those paradoxes again. For never had he met a woman more innocent, more artless, and more wholly unaware of her own charms than this one. Certainly he’d never met one so deeply, innately passionate. None of it—

nothing about this whole blasted night—made sense to him.

But there was no resolving the matter just now. There was still the shadow of Gorsky’s death lingering over them, and the business of the house across the street. He still needed to somehow convince her to leave matters to him. Oh, she’d promised him a month, but she’d lied through her teeth, perhaps unconsciously, but a lie all the same. Just now, however, he hadn’t the energy for that sort of fight. So he kissed the round of her shoulder, and drifted off with Phaedra in his arms.
